For

With reference to your letter No.37615/1903

of the 31st of October last I have now the honour to recommend to you Mr Arthur Lane of the Fire Brigade Station Manchester Square, W. as a suitable candidate for appointment as Assistant Engineer and Station Officer in the Hong Kong Fire Brigade.

2. Mr Lane, who has had 15 years service with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, is 37 years of age and is married but has no children. He is prepared to accept the appointment on condition that free passage is provided for his wife and that he is allowed married quarters. Mr Lane has satisfied Sir Patrick Manson as to his fitness to serve in Hong Kong and is prepared to leave this country during the latter part of January.

3. I enclose herewith an extract from the report of 4th Dec.1903 Mr Padeley, who examined the candidates for this post, and who recommends the appointment of Mr Lane, shewing that in his opinion it is impossible to get a single man for the post.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

Under Secretary of State,

Akkeet-

for Crown Agents.
